Junction 32 of the A14

These shots are of Junction 32 of the A14 at Histon in Cambridgeshire before,during and after construction of the A45 Cambridge Northern Bypass, now the A14. Work started in 1976 and the road was opened on 21st December 1978. The pictures are arranged in chronological order. What was once a fairly rural location is now a notoriously busy and congested trunk road. Looking back at these shots 35 years ago, what stands out is the lack of a health and safety regime at the time. No construction staff appear to be wearing hard hats or hi vis jackets. There was also no objection to me clambering up ladders and piles of sand to get these photos. How times have changed.

A line of ancient cars are held up at temporary traffic lights by the passage of a massive earth mover across the old B1049. The view is looking towards Histon with the houses on Lone Tree Avenue on the left. 17th July 1977

  • The scene on 30th October 1977. We are looking north towards Histon along the route of the old B1049 with the new road under construction to the right. The earth bank of the westbound slip road can be seen behind the blue sign.

  • 27th October 1978.  The new road is now open from the Cambridge direction up to the flyover. The old route to the left is now closed off. The Kings Hedges Road junction can be seen to the right, no traffic lights yet.  The old route of Arbury Road can be seen in the hedge line to the left and right of the new road. The new road opened on 23rd October 1978.
  • The view looking east from a point west of the Histon bound flyover. The road sign and the old route of the B1049 stretch of road have only weeks left before they become part of the A14.  27th October 1978.
  • View west from the Histon bound flyover looking towards the Girton Interchange. The old B1049 Cambridge to Histon Road runs across the picture in the foreground. The two banks for the slip roads can clearly be seen with gaps for the old road.  26th December 1977.
  • The old route of the B1049 into Cambridge  looking towards Histon with fields on both sides of the road. The A14 dual carriageway will cross the road here from left to right with the signpost marking the centre line of the road. The car is standing about where the Westbound slip road will be.<br />

  • The first sign of work starting on the A14. This the old B1049 road looking towards Histon. The current flyovers are in the field to the right behind the fence. The centre line of the A14 passes from left to right where the road sign is in the distance.  24th October 1976.
  • The old B1049 looking towards Cambridge. The Capri is located about where the old Arbury Road turn off was.  August 1975
  • The old Arbury Road junction with the old B1049 facing Arbury. Looking towards the right from the next photo. The new road now crosses the picture about where the bend is. The scene is totally unrecogniseable today.  August 1975.

  • This was the view looking east towards Milton from the Histon bound flyover. The supporting piers for the Cambridge bound flyover have been completed. The gap in the treeline in the distance is where the A14 crosses the railway line, now the guided busway.  17th July 1977
