Junction 32 of the A14

These shots are of Junction 32 of the A14 at Histon in Cambridgeshire before, during and after construction of the A45 Cambridge Northern Bypass, now the A14. Work started in 1976 and the road was opened on 21st December 1978. The pictures are arranged in chronological order. What was once a fairly rural location is now a notoriously busy and congested trunk road. Looking back at these shots 35 years ago, what stands out is the lack of a health and safety regime at the time. No construction staff appear to be wearing hard hats or hi vis jackets. There was also no objection to me clambering up ladders and piles of sand to get these photos. How times have changed.

This part of the old Histon to Cambridge road will soon disappear for ever. View looking south towards Histon. The earth banks of the two slip roads can clearly be seen. In about a years time the A14 will wipe out this part of the road from left to right with the centre line being where the road sign is. Today the old road terminates here at the bank of the westbound slip road. 30th October 1977

The A14 flyovers will be built in the fenced off field to the right which at the time contained sheep. The new current route of the B1049 will be built to the right of the picture running down from the flyovers. The only landmark which is still in place today is the house to the right of the large conifer in the middle of the picture which is in Cambridge Road Impington, but now the other side of the dual carriageway. Picture dated 22nd February 1976.
