Junction 32 of the A14

These shots are of Junction 32 of the A14 at Histon in Cambridgeshire before, during and after construction of the A45 Cambridge Northern Bypass, now the A14. Work started in 1976 and the road was opened on 21st December 1978. The pictures are arranged in chronological order. What was once a fairly rural location is now a notoriously busy and congested trunk road. Looking back at these shots 35 years ago, what stands out is the lack of a health and safety regime at the time. No construction staff appear to be wearing hard hats or hi vis jackets. There was also no objection to me clambering up ladders and piles of sand to get these photos. How times have changed.

Although the negative has somewhat deteriorated, this is the scene before any work took place on the A14. The area has changed beyond all recognition. The view is looking towards Histon from near the old Arbury Road Junction with the old route of the B1049. No parts of this road are still in use as a main road, but it is is still there with access through a gate.. The A14 flyovers will be built in the fenced off field to the right which at the time contained sheep. The new current route of the B1049 will be built to the right of the picture running down from the flyovers. The only landmark which is still in place today is the house to the right of the large conifer in the middle of the picture which is in Cambridge Road Impington, but now the other side of the dual carriageway. Picture dated 22nd February 1976.
