Murrow West
Murrow West, Cambridgeshire between March and Spalding. Viewed facing south towards March. The single track M and GN line to Peterborough (to the right} crosses on the level from left to right. This was the scene of a serious collision on 4th October 1941. A freight train on the GN and GER line had jumped the West Station's home signal and had stopped at the signal box. It was subsequently hit by a freight on the M and GN heading east towards Wisbech, to the left, travelling at speed under clear signals. The devastating collision demolished the signal box completely. The box was subsequently replaced with the current structure (previous photos) diagonally opposite, which opened on 26th November 1950. The station was closed in 1953 and no trace exists today. Must have been a superb place for spotting.
