Abandoned Lines and Stations

A miscellaneous collection of photos of disused stations and lines throughout East Anglia. Much has changed. Some of the stations no longer exist having disappeared under housing estates and road improvements. Bridges and other infrastructure are disappearing at an increasing rate, although some of the Victorian architecture has been preserved. References used for dates and information unless otherwise stated, Forgotten Railways (East Anglia) R.S. Joby and A Regional History of The Railways of Great Britain Volume 5 by D.I. Gordon.

Saffron Walden Branch

Saffron Walden Branch, Essex. Bridge Number 2111 between Audley End and Saffron Walden at N.G.R. TL526368 , viewed towards Saffron Walden on 15th September 1959. Note the steep gradient. The bridge carried a farm track. No trace remains today, the cuttings have been filled in and the surrounding area reverting back to pre railway days. Looking at this location on Google Earth it's hard to believe such a structure ever existed. At least this fine example of Victorian railway architecture was recorded on camera. The bridge was one of two, three arched structures between Audley End and Saffron Walden. Passenger services between Audley End, Saffron Walden and Bartlow closed on 7th September 1964. Freight was withdrawn on 28th December 1964. Photo British Railways. Information source "The Saffron Walden Branch" by Peter Paye.
