Interesting shot taken from above the entrance to Stoke Tunnel. A Class 37, D67XX is approaching heading towards the station on the main London line. Judging by the livery and half yellow front of the 37 the image was taken around the early sixties. The large building in the centre is the wagon and carriage repair shed. To the extreme right is the fitting shop and to the left of it with the roof vents is the engine shed. A water tower stands centre right and above the roof of the wagon shed, a class 31 is having a rest. In the background across the River Orwell the chimneys of Cliff Quay Power Station dominate the scene. Today this view is unrecognisable . Everything has gone apart from the main line to the right. Houses now occupy most of the area, the power station being demolished in November 1994. I remember watching the chimneys disappear, from my bedroom window.
Image with thanks to Michael Giles.
