Abandoned Lines and Stations

A miscellaneous collection of photos of disused stations and lines throughout East Anglia. Much has changed. Some of the stations no longer exist having disappeared under housing estates and road improvements. Bridges and other infrastructure are disappearing at an increasing rate, although some of the Victorian architecture has been preserved. References used for dates and information unless otherwise stated, Forgotten Railways (East Anglia) R.S. Joby and A Regional History of The Railways of Great Britain Volume 5 by D.I. Gordon.

Stour Valley Line

Bridge carrying the Stour Valley Line over the old A604 road west of Haverhill. NGR TL 640468. This was apparently a notorious accident black spot. As a result the bridge was demolished and the road realigned not long after the line closed in 1967. Many thanks to Stephen Mason for identifying the location. Thank you for your interesting recollections of the bridge David and for correcting the location.

I know this bridge very well — as a child I travelled over it, hauled along by an E4 (I think) on journeys between Shelford and Haverhill. As a young adult I have driven cars under it. This bridge was indeed 'a notorious accident black spot', I remember very well approaching the bridge (by road around 1966 ) and meeting an overturned furniture-type lorry staddelled across the road where the car is in the photo. This bridge, however, was not 'east of Haverhill', it was in fact about half-a-mile from Haverhill on the Cambridge (North West) side of that town. Approximate post code CB9 7SW.
