Newmarket

  • Bury Junction signal box facing east towards Thurston. The line to Thetford is to the left. That to Long Melford to the right.
  • Dullingham facing Newmarket from a postcard.
  • Dullingham with a nice view of the station house, now demolished.
  • Newmarket on 21st August 1975 with the 0953 Cambridge to Ipswich arriving. The supurb canopy on the down platform has long gone. This part of the platform is now disused.

  • Dullingham 1979
  • A train load of new Ford imports pass through Kennet on 25th June 1980 with 40197 in charge. The working is the 1425 Parkeston to Bathgate/Mossend (Glasgow)
  • Two car Cravens crosses Coldhams Common, Cambridge on a Cambridge to Harwich working in September 1980 with driver Cliff Fenn. On the skyline is the gasometer and the pumping station chimney off Newmarket Road. The latter as seen on TV when steeplejack Fred Dibnah climbed it.
  • 55015 "Tulya" passing Newmarket on a "Deltic through East Anglian" railtour on 3rd September 1978. The tour was to Lowestoft from Kings Cross via Cambridge and Norwich. The return trip was down the East Suffolk line to Ipswich and then back to Kings Cross via Cambridge.
  • Fulbourn Signal Box, a Great Eastern Saxby and Farmer design which closed on 8th May 1983. The station goods shed can also be seen. 8th December 1979
  • Westley Road Crossing between Six Mile Bottom and Dullingham 8th December 1979.
  • North east of Dullingham is the bridge carrying the road to Stetchworth. An Ipswich bound dmu is approaching the bridge. The line has just been made single with the Up line truncated at this point. To the left is Dullingham's Up distant. 8th December 1979.
  • Cravens two car unit forming the 1250 Cambridge to Ipswich passes Fulbourn Box ( BR spelt it with an e) 8th December 1979

  • A refurbished class 101 leaves the single line from Warren Hill Tunnel and Newmarket and joins the line from Ely at Chippenham Junction. The working is the 1250 Cambridge to Ipswich on a very hot August 27th 1980. Taken with a 200mm lens
  • 31325 approaches Chippenham Junction on 27th August 1980. It's not readily apparant why the second man is leaning out of the cab, but the line from here to Soham has been singled due to long term engineering work and he is probably waiting to grab the pouch for the single line key token from the signal box. The working is the 1240 Parkeston Quay to Peterborough.
  • In the days of loose coupled freights and brake vans an immaculate 37178 approaches Chippenham Junction on 22nd February 1978. This was probably a Bury St Edmunds to Whitemoor working.
  • Time was, when even small village stations such as Dullingham had a through hauled service to Liverpool Street. 37110 arrives, in charge of the 0712 Ipswich to Liverpool Street via Cambridge on a cold murky 22nd February 1978.
  • An Ipswich bound two car Cravens has just left Newmarket and is passing the grain siding. c1982
  • 156409 on an Ipswich to Cambridge working at Elmswell. 2nd March 2009
