Ipswich to Lowestoft
Saxmundham Signal Box now the only operational box on the line. It functions as the control centre for the Radio Electronic Token Block signalling system used on the East Suffolk Line. This was introduced on 16th February 1986. It's associated radio repeater mast can be seen to the right of the box, linked to equipment in the nearby water tower. FOOTNOTE. The RETB system is no longer operational. The OFCOM licence was rescinded. It used frequencies in the 200 Mhz band III which are used by television systems on the continent and thus prone to co channel interference. The East Suffolk system has been re engineered using conventional signalling with the control remaining at Saxmundham. The RETB system closed on 19th October 2012. Image dated 15th June 2009
