The Brian Leighton Collection
Gallery at present work in progress. Enjoy a journey back in time to steam days mostly in the Ipswich/East Suffolk area. Most of the shots were taken by Brian Leighton who was a railwayman based at Ipswich depot. The majority date from the fifties/sixties. Many thanks to Ian and Ruby Leighton for permission to publish the photos. Unfortunately most of the images had no descriptions and I would be grateful if anyone could identify some of the mystery locations or engines.

4472 on a visit to Essex. I was unsure of the location, but many thanks to John Diss for identifying it as Manningtree Station facing north towards south Junction.

on April 7, 2017Whoops. Thanks Mark for pointing out my error. You are definitely correct, text now changed. The picture is not mine so not sure why the working is running wrong line. Alan

on April 4, 2017I fully agree with John Diss who notes that the picture is "looking towards south junction". It however is not facing south as the junctions are north of the station! (The train appears to be running "wrong-line" - any idea why?)

on March 10, 2017This is Manningtree station, looking towards south junction. Key features are the water tower, the signals to the right, the pylon and the building in the 'Y' of thre junction.
